.: All About Us!

The Monterey & Salinas Valley Railroad Museum is dedicated to creating & maintaining a Railroad Museum in Salinas with an emphasis on the historic, contemporary and future value of the Railroad to the Salinas Valley and Monterey Bay  Regions, providing experiential educational opportunities for children  of all ages, enhancing the core curriculum and inspiring civic involvement in our communities.

We started as a model railroading club back in the 1970s, meeting at various places and found a permanant home at the historic Railway Express Agency building in the 1990s thanks to the generous lease agreement with the City of Salinas where we traded rent for volunteer hours restoring the building. We also got our non-profit staus as the Monterey & Salinas Valley Railroad Modeling & Historical Society.

In 2006 the organization decided to work towards creating a museum to share our passion for trains and railroading history with everyone we could. We began the planning and work involved to transform the Railway Express Agency (REA) building and the full-size cars into an interactive experience where kids of all ages could enjoy the fun of railroading.

By 2013 the museum was participating in the 1st Fridays Art Walk and open to the public one weekend a month. Our dedicated volunteeers continued to work on the interactive exhibits and we won grants from the Community Foundation for Monterey County, the Harden Foundation and the Arts Council for Monterey County which along with private donations, enabled us to complete 90% of our museum exhibits. We now offer tours for school groups, community groups, visitors, and the museum space is available for special events like parties and weddings.
