The Monterey & Salinas Valley Railroad Museum is dedicated to creating & maintaining a Railroad Museum in Salinas with an emphasis on the historic, contemporary and future value of the Railroad to the Salinas Valley and Monterey Bay  Regions, providing experiential educational opportunities for children  of all ages, enhancing the core curriculum and inspiring civic involvement in our communities.

The full-size locomotive, caboose and rail cars have been restored by volunteer members and the museum features interactive exhibits focused on the history of the Railroad in Monterey County. A miniature diorama with working trains occupies more that two-thirds of the museum space and depicts the Monterey Bay & Salinas Valley railroads circa 1950s.

We are open to the public every Thursday evening from 6pm-9pm, the 1st Friday of every month from 4pm-8pm and the weekend following the 1st Friday, from 10am-4pm. Admission is free, and donations in any amount are gratefully accepted and much appreciated. The museum also offers tours for school groups, community groups, visitors, and is available for special events.

Miniature Diorama

The Monterey & Salinas Valley Railroad Museum features a miniature diorama depicting the Monterey Bay and Salinas Valley - areas significant to the history of the railroad in the region. Cities such as Salinas, Castroville, Soledad, and San Lucas are included, as well as important agricultural sites involved in packing, shipping, and icing during the heyday of railroad transportation are also represented. Pictured to the left is the Salinas Train Station, dating from 1942.

Museum Events

The museum's annual Dinner Party on the Train raises funds for exhibits, maintenance, and basic costs of conserving historic railroad artifacts. Held in October, the event features live music, local wine, a fabulous dinner, and silent auction. Tours of the train cars and interactive historical exhibits round out an evening of fun, friends, food, and trains This fall it is on November 14, from 5pm-9pm. Every May we celebrate National Train Day on the Saturday before Mother's Day. It's fun for the entire family, with music, food, wine tasting, silent auction, kid's story time, crafts, vintage luggage contest, and much more. The event is free to the public on May 7th, 2016.
